My wife and I went to our last parent’s weekend at Providence College. Brendan is a senior and will be graduating in May. He’s in a band called The Biltmores. They weren’t performing during our stay so Dan Baxter, Brendan and John Pitts entertained us in the basement of their off-campus apartment with an impromptu, unpracticed acoustic version of one of their new songs. It’s called Sadgrass.
This is a cool song played by a Chicago based group called The Outlaw Family Band and videotaped at a Chicago bar/restaurant called Horseshoe where they play on most Thursday nights. I became acquainted with their music through my banjo teacher Ben Wright who is a member of the band. “Separation Man” was written by their lead singer James Weigel, a great wordsmith and the author of many other terrific songs. The Outlaw Family Band will travel with me on the midwest leg of my book tour, playing at readings and afterwards at local venues.
Here’s the follow-up to the first Jack Logan story. This aired on Today in January of 1996. If anybody knows what Logan is up to these days, let me know. I liked him a lot.
This Today show story on singer Jack Logan aired in 1995. I did a follow-up a year later and will post that story in a few days. I’m assuming that Mr. Logan is still writing great songs…and still laughing. At least I hope so.
To honor the Irish on St. Patrick’s Day here is a story from Dublin that aired on the Today show back in 1989. Rock bands from Ireland were in vogue in the late 1980’s so I focused on a group that had potential but hadn’t yet made it. They were good musicians and good guys but the band went nowhere. Why?
